SSM prioritizes healthcare for seniors

Morelia, Michigan, Aug. 28, 2023. – Improving the health and quality of life of the elderly is a joint effort between the various agencies of the government of Alfredo Ramírez Bedola, so the redoubled efforts through the Michoacán State Secretariat of Health (SSM) benefit this segment of the population efforts, actions and programs.

According to a press release, mental health care for this population is so critical that, during 2023, 172 initial and follow-up consultations in neurology and psychology were provided through psychiatric hospitals, where the leading cause of care was dementia and depression.

Among the top 10 causes in this group, respiratory diseases accounted for 31,000,246 cases, followed by urinary tract infections with 12,0172 cases, intestinal infections with 9,572 cases, Covid-19 with 5,517 cases, and ulcerative gastroenteritis with 4,090 cases.

In addition, so far in 2023, there have been 3,177 new cases of hypertension, 2,543 cases of diabetes, 2,147 cases of conjunctivitis, and 1,711 cases of obesity.

The Ministry of Health provides medical units such as the Women’s Hospital and the National Center for Cancer Care (CEAO) to older women in Michoacan for the early detection of various cancer pathologies, conditions, and various comorbidities common in this age group that affect their health and Lives are at greater risk.

Finally, through the “Salud en tu Familia” program, which provides medical care to disabled elderly people at home and provides functional support such as canes, walkers and wheelchairs, 3,000 units have been distributed so far this year, with 758 devices.
