Statement from Erdogan regarding the Supreme Court crisis-AYM

The Constitutional Court ruled that the rights to “right to candidacy” and “personal freedom and security” of the imprisoned Turkish Workers’ Party MP in Hatay, Can Atalay, had been violated. Following this decision, the Supreme Court filed a criminal complaint against members of the Constitutional Court.

In response to journalists’ questions on the plane returning from Uzbekistan, President Erdogan said the following about the crisis the judiciary is experiencing:

“The court is also a supreme court.”

– First of all, no one can deny that the Supreme Court is a supreme court. At this stage, unfortunately, the Constitutional Court made many mistakes one after another. This saddens us greatly.

– As of now, the decision taken by the Supreme Court can never be overturned or set aside. Against the Constitutional Court decision, the Supreme Court has now said: “If you are the Supreme Court, then I am the Supreme Court as well, and as the Supreme Court, I now ask for a penalty to be imposed on you.”

– The requirements of this request are expected and this request is requested from the entity that will fulfill the requirements of this request. If this is Parliament, then he wants it from Parliament.

– Now take Can Atalay and put him aside. Unfortunately, similar things have happened before. Our Parliament is also acting slowly on these issues. In other words, many terrorists fled and went abroad due to the delay in the process of lifting their immunity in Parliament.

“Deviants who flee abroad”

-These matters should not be taken seriously. These things need to be completed with very quick decisions. When these steps are not taken sequentially, the next thing you know someone is showing up in America, someone in Germany, someone in France. And then they threaten Türkiye from there. My country should not and cannot face the threat of deviants who have fled abroad.

“Some people in my party are making mistakes.”

The Constitutional Court cannot, and should not, underestimate this step taken by the Supreme Court in this regard. If some friends of my party here criticize the Supreme Court and praise the Constitutional Court, they are also making a mistake. We must act with an understanding of the principle of “one for all and all for one.” There’s no point walking around here and looking nice for someone.

– Finally, I would like to emphasize that the authority to draw up the constitution belongs to our Supreme Assembly and it cannot delegate this authority. No one can challenge this absolute authority of Parliament formed by the will of the nation.
