A study conducted by the Biomedical Research Institute of Seville (IBiS) and the Santa Maria del Rossio University Hospital in Seville has demonstrated the effectiveness and safety of simultaneous vaccination against Covid-19 and influenza. This approach can reduce the burden on health systems and optimize resources and time to action.
The study was led by IBiS and involved Adolfo GarcÃa Sastre’s team at the University of Seville, Los Bermejales Health Center and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. It is funded by the Ministry of Economic Transformation, Industry, Knowledge and Universities of the Government of Andalusia and Feder funds.

MarÃa Elisa Cordero, head of the “Viral infections and immunosuppressed patients” group at IBiS, stresses that the effects of vaccination against influenza and Covid-19 at the same time are equivalent to those given separately. Even responses to some types of influenza viruses have improved.
The researchers noted that further study of immune responses in people with reduced immunity, such as immunosuppressed patients, is still needed to improve the effectiveness of concomitant vaccinations.
