Sudan on Thursday called on the United Nations to “immediately end” the organization’s political mission in the country, which goes by the name United Nations Integrated Mission to Support the Transition Phase in Sudan (UNITAMS).
Sudan’s foreign minister-designate, Ali Al-Sadiq, informed the United Nations Security Council in a letter seen by Reuters.
“The Government of Sudan has called on the United Nations to immediately end the UNITAMS mission,” Al-Sadiq wrote in a letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, and distributed to the UN Security Council. At the same time, we would like to assure you that the Government of Sudan is committed to dealing constructively with the Council.” Public safety and security”.
He continued: “The purpose of establishing the mission (was) to assist the transitional government in Sudan, following the December 2018 revolution,” adding that the mission’s results in implementing its objectives “have been disappointing.”
In response to a question about Sudan’s decision, Stephane Dujarric, Guterres’ spokesman, said the message had been received and had been disseminated to the Security Council.
A war broke out between the Sudanese army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces on April 15, after weeks of growing tensions between the two sides over a plan to join forces as part of efforts to transition from military to civilian democratic rule .
