You may remember the “scandal” that surrounded co-stars Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell back in the spring, when the pair sparked real-life romance rumors while kicking off a promotional tour for their upcoming rom-com. Anyone but you— a story that gained even more attention given that Powell split from his girlfriend Gigi Paris around the same time. Who’s to say what really happened, but there’s no denying that the two actors have chemistry, as evidenced by the first trailer for the scintillating new film, set to hit theaters on December 22.
Opens with a shot of Sweeney striding down the hallway with the same confidence as EuphoriaIt’s Cassie Howard and is seen bumping into a confused Powell. There are immediate fireworks as they are then shown as cavers on yachts, by the pool, at parties and, in a striking final shot, on the beach as the camera pans over their stunning landscape: the sun-drenched south-east of Australia. Under the direction of EasilyWill Gluck’s film was described as a free modernization Much ado about nothing, with the magazine captioning: “When college sworn enemies Bea and Ben reunite years after graduation for a wedding, they pretend to be a couple for their own personal reasons. But by pretending, they actually fall in love.” As cliched as it may be, it’s a tried-and-true rom-com concept for a reason.
Also piqued by our interest is the impressive supporting cast, whose rom-com careers are second to none: you have Dermot Mulroney, the best friend Julia Roberts covets in My best friend’s weddingand their 90s classic co-star Rachel Griffiths together Never I Neverresident heartthrob Darren Barnett, With love, SimonAlexandra Shipp and Moxiethat’s Hadley Robinson, as well as people like Michelle Hurd, Bryan Brown, Joe Davidson and rapper GaTa.
What about the two leads? “Sydney plays a character (who is) an absolute nightmare,” Powell told audiences at CinemaCon in April. Sweeney responded that Powell’s character was an “asshole”, adding: “What better place for a nightmare and an asshole than on the other side of the world in the most romantic setting imaginable?” Say no more.
