Talakay describes John Legend’s chair turn on The Voice

Sacramento singer Talakai became a partner on NBC’s “The Voice” after meeting coach John Legend during the blind auditions. Talakay, 34, also wowed Reba McEntire with his vocal performance of Sam Smith’s “Stay with Me” this week, but his obvious resemblance to Legend’s lookalike was also a big talking point on the show. “Wait ’til you see his face,” Legend told Niall Horan and Gwen Stefani as the other coaches swiveled in their chairs after Talakay’s performance. Legend has it that Talakay seemed like “a taller, more beautiful version of me on stage.” He joked that he had sent photos of people who looked like him many times, but Talakay “legitimately looks like me” and has the same hairstyle. Talakay said his colleagues made the same comparison, and at school, kids sang Legend’s “Ordinary People” as he passed them in the hallways. Legend revealed that he turned his chair early because he liked the richness of Talakay’s voice: “I know for a fact that you have the ability to be so great on this show,” he said. “Add a little more narrative to it. This will make you undeniable to everyone.” Talakay joined KCRA 3 in the studio on Wednesday, saying his experience on “The Voice” so far has been a “dream” and “surreal.” Talakay said he hoped Legend would turn his chair, but when it happened, he was shocked and “had to restrain himself” to make it to the performance. “I thought, ‘He literally looks like part of the family,’” Talakay said. Talakay, who works at Tower Cafe, said he started his career performing at open mics and would like to have more performing experience. “But I think the open mics really helped me get on stage and get my nerves out a little bit,” he said. He said the talent of Season 24 inspired him. Talakai isn’t the only Sacramento singer to appear on the show this season. Kristen Brown from Roseville also passed the blind auditions and joined Stephanie’s team. Last season, Sacramento singer Gina Miles became The Voice champion. Both Talakay and Brown then perform in the “battle” portion of the singing competition. “The Voice” airs on KCRA Channel 3 on Mondays and Tuesdays.
