Infinity pool

Brandon Cronenberg created this wild and twisted tale of a husband and wife (Alexander Skarsgård and Mia Goth) whose vacation turns into a nightmare. After he accidentally kills a man, Sgarsgård is sentenced to death. However, he has the ability to clone himself, so the clone will be executed.

Sounds good, right? Wrong because the choice forces a person to question self-identity and what is reality and what is not. Even when it seems like it’s over, there’s more to this dark journey. It’s a dark and twisted story about a man literally ready to take his own life, and it shows that the “perfect escape” is anything but.

Owner

Before Infinity pool Brandon Cronenberg left his mark on this 2020 film with a brilliant idea. Andrea Riseborough is an assassin with the perfect method of remaining undetected. She uses a special chip to grab the bodies of random people, use them to stab them, and then jump out, causing them to commit suicide.

It’s already a cool idea, but it gets better when Riseborough’s latest job goes wrong and she ends up stuck in a man’s body. Now two psychos fight for control, among other dark battles. It leans more toward sci-fi, but for horror fans, there’s plenty of Riseborough’s struggle for identity and gruesome fun here.

Jagged Mind

How far are you willing to risk for love? This dark 2023 film answers that question. Maisie Richardson-Sellers is a woman who falls in love with an unusual woman played by Shannon Woodward. A seemingly perfect relationship falls apart as Richardson-Sellers continues to have strange outbursts where her girlfriend changes character and seemingly relives events.

Eventually realizing that she is caught in a strange time loop, Richardson-Sellers tries to escape. It’s a gripping story with unique twists and turns for two damaged and complex women, and the strange romance makes the scares even more frightening. It’s a compelling story that has some horror elements mixed with romance, giving a darker twist to the sci-fi idea.

Crimes of the future

Only the twisted mind of David Cronenberg could have created this film. In the future, when humanity has evolved to no longer feel pain, Viggo Mortensen and his wife Léa Seydoux staged a “performance” in which Mortensen’s organs are removed in front of a live audience and then grown back. Yes, as harsh as that may sound, it remains compelling for this film.

A good supporting cast, including Kristen Stewart and Scott Speedman, helps this dark and twisted film. It’s crazy even by Kroenberg’s own standards, but it’s also a terrifying look that raises tough questions about how far some people will go for a thrill.

Alexis Jacknow turned her story into a thrilling 2023 film. Diana Agron is a woman who will soon turn 39 and is determined to have a baby before then. The doctor assumes that her body clock is broken and puts her on a treatment that makes her imagine that she is being stalked by a mysterious tall woman.

It gets even stranger when Agron no longer sees color and is obsessed with the clocks around her. The ending may be confusing and leave you wondering if what you saw is real or not, but the ride itself is wild as birth horrors are always good for a little scare.

Fresh

They say a date scene can turn into a horror movie, but nothing like that. Daisy Edgar-Jones is a woman who uses a dating app to find a handsome man, played by Sebastian Stan. The relationship looks good at first until Stan drugs her and chains her up. He is a cannibal who plans to use her not only for food, but also to satisfy others.

While a friend rushes to save her, Daisy has a terrible time in some bloody scenes. What’s even worse is that Daisy is not his first victim, and one of them may be Stan’s accomplice. It’s a truly twisted take on the rom-com, with a brutal final scene that gives new meaning to the term “date from hell.”

No one will save you

When Stephen King openly recommends something like a great horror film, it’s worth watching. It is noteworthy that there is almost no dialogue in this film, which enhances the already creepy atmosphere. Kaitlyn Dever is a young woman who, for some reason, is completely despised by everyone in her town, including her parents.

“Alienation” takes on a new dimension when she encounters an intruder who is an actual alien. The sci-fi themes blend well with the horror, and Dever gives a fantastic performance. The lack of spoken dialogue underscores the unsettling story, and the ending is a whimsical happy ending that ends up being even scarier.

Production

Yes, it’s more of a classic sci-fi franchise, but it can also be classified as horror. It helps that it’s the best Predator film since the 1987 original. Amber Midthunder is an 18th-century Native American woman trying to prove herself as a warrior. She gets the chance to take part in the hunt… only for the hunters to become the prey of one of the cloaked alien Predators.

As various hunters fall, Midgrom engages in a dark battle with this alien. It’s great to see this non-tech woman take on an advanced Predator using her wits for some exciting action. It can be scary, especially the ending and why this series has always been both horror and sci-fi.

Hatching

Trying to describe this Finnish film from 2022 is quite wild. Try to look. The mother pushes the young gymnast to always have the right body image. After killing the crow, she takes its egg home to raise. So far this sounds like a good family movie. This continued until the egg grew and hatched into a bizarre bird figure who would become the girl’s incredible friend.

Things get darker when the “pet” begins going to extreme measures to protect the girl, including destroying her rivals and brutally attacking her mother. It intensifies as it becomes a crazy horror film, but also works as an analogy for body issues and how parental pressure can lead to some dark behavior.

Barbarian

Zach Cregger makes a sensational debut as writer and director with this 2022 thriller. The scene is like a Hallmark Channel rom-com: two people discover they’ve rented the same house and are sharing it. The fun ends early when a woman is attacked by a mysterious stalker. It gets darker when the owner of the house is fired for his behavior and returns home to find the same intruder.

Soon the three are captured and discover the house’s dark history. Instead of teaming up to escape, the trio fights among themselves, and harsh dialogue causes panic. It was a good hit and showed that a new generation was ready to make horror films more fun.

Bad hair

When you mix laughs and fear, this 2020 movie is terrible. Elle Lorraine is a woman who has a fantastic hairstyle that makes her a hit at the local beauty salon. It doesn’t take her long to realize that the hairs are somehow possessed by demons to kill anyone they believe threatens their owner. Yes, it’s crazy, but it’s also disgusting to watch.

The film is a biting satire of culture and what it takes to look that good. The scenes in which the hair goes on a rampage while Lorraine is horrified are both terrifying and incredibly hilarious, and it all adds up to a film that will haunt you the next time you get your hair cut.

A stunning cast supports this wonderful dark comedy that takes a sinister turn. Anya Taylor-Joy is among the guests traveling to the island where chef Ralph Fiennes is planning an exclusive dinner. There are some good confrontations between the wealthy guests before Fiennes begins to reveal their dark secrets and they realize too late that they cannot leave.

The film is well structured: each “course” increases the tension and everything becomes even more terrible. Taylor-Joy is the highlight, but the cast with Nicholas Hoult and others only adds to the madness. Eventually it comes down to a brutal final “desert” as this film offers plenty of blood and fun fare for thrills.

Malignant

James Wan helms this sinister 2021 hit that delivers one of the best horror films in years. Annabelle Wallis is a young woman who is tormented by visions of brutal murders that somehow become reality. The search for answers leads down a dark road into her own past and its secrets.

The build-up to the reveal is done professionally, and the final revelation is shocking. The ending may be wild, but it fits as it’s a dark experience to be savored for a film that will give you goosebumps long after it’s finished.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil

It’s time to get wild in this beloved 2010 cult classic. Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine are the main characters, a pair of woodland hillbillies who are sweet and friendly (if slow-witted) guys. When they find a teenage girl separated from her friends, they try to help. But, brought up on horror films, other teenagers consider these guys to be psychopaths and are trying to “save” their friend.

All this leads to teenagers accidentally killing themselves in extremely funny ways, while Tucker and Dale think they are the target. The film builds to a great ending with a wonderful satire of the slasher genre that is funny in its own right.

Seven

In conclusion, here is David Fincher’s 1995 thrill masterpiece. Morgan Freeman is an elderly detective and Brad Pitt is his younger partner, tracking down a serial killer who models his victims after The Seven Deadly Sins. Each murder is darker than the next as cops wonder if they are dealing with something more than just a person.

Instead, when Kevin Spacey appears as John Doe, his very banality is scarier than any demon. This pays off in the infamous climax, when Pitt, Freeman, Spacey and Gwenyth Paltrow help Finicher show that humans can often be the greatest horror of all.

Which of these horror movies will you watch on Hulu for a night of thrills? Have we missed any great scary movies streaming on Hulu?
