And if you work with a professional make-up artist, it’s also useful for him: “Having a reference can allow you to better realize what you have in mind,” explains make-up artist Gucci Westman.
2. Take photos during the test
If you intend to partner with a professional makeup artist, it’s important to find someone who understands your style. Consult a few different makeup artists early on and book at least six months in advance: “Spending a lot of time exploring and perfecting your process, as well as figuring out which products work for you, will save you a lot of stress on the morning of the wedding.” says Eldridge.
It’s always best to test beforehand and check that all products don’t backfire: “Take photos first, so you get an idea of how it will look in photos and in person,” explains make-up artist Charlie Riddle.
If you’re going to do your own makeup, as Kate Middleton did, that’s just as important: “Practice the look several times before the wedding,” says makeup artist Holly Gowers. “Be sure to write down what you used.”
3. Pamper your skin to get the best foundation possible
“The day of your wedding is all about prepping your skin, making sure it’s hydrated and glowing before applying makeup,” says esthetician Shani Darden. If you haven’t been diligent in caring for your skin, it’s time to start.
Healthy, glowing skin is the perfect canvas for glowing makeup. Regular facials help prepare your skin, but try to avoid any kind of invasive treatments too close to the big day, says makeup artist Misha Shandaz.
4. Primer is essential to make makeup last
Your wedding day is a marathon, not a sprint, and you’ll want your makeup to last until the last photo, dance and toast.
