Legionella is a type of bacteria that lives in surface water such as lakes, rivers or ponds. From there, it can invade hot or cold sanitary water systems or other facilities that require water to operate and can generate aerosols. Water colonized with Legionella, when dispersed as an aerosol, can become a source of infection if conditions favorable to its growth and reproduction exist (temperature, dirt, stagnation) and the bacteria are present in concentrations sufficient to infect humans.
The actions taken aim to reduce the risk of the spread of this bacterium by inspecting, cleaning and disinfecting the hot and cold water supply systems of different municipal facilities. After cleaning and disinfection, tests are performed to verify the success of the treatment.
Sanitization began the week of August 21 and ended on Tuesday, in an effort to get everything ready for the start of the school year and athletic season. Work will continue at the local police headquarters in September and at the municipal market in November.

As a city council we have a duty to maintain adequate sanitation in places at risk to prevent public Health. Legionnaires’ disease is an environmental illness caused by Legionella bacteria that can present with mild flu-like symptoms such as fever, malaise, or headache. In this case, it disappears without treatment. However, if Legionnaires’ disease shows severe symptoms, it may progress to severe pneumonia and require treatment with antibiotics.
The disease is spread through the air, by breathing in water vapor or aerosols that contain the bacteria. But it does not spread from person to person in any way. It is also not spread by ingestion of drinking water. It mainly affects the elderly or people with severe medical conditions and low defense levels.
