Surprise! While Killers of the Flower Moon gave Martin Scorsese his top spot at the US box office, one surprise international hit surpassed both the legendary director and Taylor Swift’s Tour Era at the global box office.
Variety reports that the Tamil film Leo, starring box office phenomenon Vijay in his 67th film as the lead, grossed $48.5 million at the box office this weekend despite receiving a four-day bonus premieres. Deadline is a little cooler from a box office standpoint, with Comscore estimating its box office to be between $43.9 million and $48.5 million.
Inspired by David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence, Leo revolves around Parthi (Vijay), a café owner and former killer who finds himself embroiled in a war against drug smuggling.
For the curious, Leo may be coming to Netflix soon. Hindustan Times had earlier reported that the streamer has the “digital rights” to the film.
Killers of the Flower Moon marked Scorsese’s undoubted success; its $44 million opening was the director’s second-biggest ever, behind 2010’s Shutter Island.
Speaking to GamesRadar+ and other press at the London Film Festival, Scorsese described how he was “fascinated” by the love story between Leonardo DiCaprio’s Ernest and Lily Gladstone’s Molly at the height of the Osage Nation murders.
“I was fascinated by it because of the love story between the characters Leo (DiCaprio) and Lily (Gladstone), Ernest and Molly. I just thought that despite everything that was going on, these two people were so in love with each other. do we really know each other?” Scorsese thought about it. “Especially in a relationship like this, with their marriage and children, she trusts him so much. He loves her, but circumstances and some special thinking, so to speak, which puts other people in a humiliated position – this takes over. “
Meanwhile, Taylor Swift continues to shine in movie theaters. The Eras Tour grossed $41.5 million worldwide for a total of $160 million and counting.
