Nearly a decade after the premiere of Mad Max: Fury Road, it looks like the long-awaited Furiosa prequel starring Anya Taylor-Joy may finally hit the big screen at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
A new report from Variety suggests that Furiosa, which is scheduled to premiere on May 24, 2024, can expect to premiere at one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world. An unnamed insider reportedly said that Warner Bros.’ “plans to try” was to have the film premiere at Cannes, as 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road did, to lead to a wider theatrical release.
Shortly after, the studio followed up on the topic by stating that Furiosa’s potential Cannes premiere was still just a rumor, and no plans could be made until the SAG-AFTRA strike was fully resolved so that the actors could perform promotion necessary for the film’s debut at the film festival. Audiences first met Imperator Furiosa in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, played by Charlize Theron, where she was one of the film’s two main characters alongside Tom Hardy’s Max Rockatansky. Upon release, the film was praised by both audiences and critics for its epic set pieces, themes of feminism and overcoming trauma, and the performances of the actors, especially Theron. Fury Road was ultimately nominated for 10 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, and immediately began talk of possible sequels and spin-offs.
Furiosa, which will focus on a younger version of the titular character, was originally announced in 2020 when longtime Mad Max director George Miller was set to return behind the camera. At the time, Warner Bros. stated that the film was already in “advanced development” and Miller was in the process of casting the lead role, which was soon revealed to be Taylor-Joy. Chris Hemsworth was cast shortly after and was later revealed to be playing a younger version of Fury Road’s villain, Immortan Joe.
