Tunisian President Kais Sayed addressed the public on the official Tunisian television channel.
Commenting on the law criminalizing normalization with Israel, which was discussed in the Tunisian People’s Assembly yesterday, Muawiyah said: “There is no normalization (with Israel) in my dictionary. Tunisia’s position on normalization is stable, and our position on the draft law criminalizing normalization has been discussed.” He said: “In Parliament, it has not changed. If it changes, this will be Palestine. This will be a betrayal of the people.”
Sayed stressed that Tunisia will continue to stand by Palestine with all its might, and said, “Tunisia will provide all kinds of support to Palestine until the occupation ends. The struggle of the Palestinians against the occupation is the struggle for the rights of the oppressed.” He added that establishing any kind of relationship with the occupying state is a betrayal of the Palestinian people. He said: “Article 60 of the Penal Code must be applied to the perpetrators of this crime.”
Chapter 60 of the Tunisian Penal Code considers all cooperation with the occupying state treason, and stipulates that the penalty for this crime is death. This article is considered an important legal basis for Tunisia in its war against the occupying state.
The Tunisian Parliament session, on November 2, in which the draft law criminalizing normalization was discussed, continued until late at night.
Parliament Speaker Ibrahim Bouderbala recommended postponing the session due to the negative effects of President Sayed’s draft law criminalizing normalization on Tunisia’s external security.
According to the draft law criminalizing normalization with Israel, the Tunisian parliament held an extraordinary session on October 17 to discuss the law, which stipulates that perpetrators of normalization crimes will be punished with imprisonment from two to five years and a fine of 10,000 to 100 pounds. One thousand Tunisian dinars ($3,200-32,000).
The written statement, which was published on the social media account of the Tunisian People’s Assembly, stated that it was decided, at the invitation of the Speaker of the Assembly, Ibrahim Bouderbala, to refer the draft law criminalizing normalization with Israel to the Parliamentary Committee on Rights. and freedoms for urgent consideration.
The statement announced that “at the extraordinary General Assembly meeting held after the developments in Palestine, 97 deputies signed an urgent consideration of the draft law criminalizing normalization with Israel.”
A protest demonstration was organized in front of the House of Representatives after the session scheduled for October 30 to discuss the law was postponed.
