Things to do in Billings this week, October 20-26 Rocky Horror

Wondering why the link to Babcock’s ticket for two showings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show includes a message to “take care of this historic theater?” When the film hit theaters in 1975, it was a very modest success. The thing is, it has remained in theaters ever since and is a perennial midnight movie favorite, complete with elaborate costumes, campy (and sleazy) props and singing. “Babcock” screenings will take place at 8:00 pm on Friday and 9:00 pm on Saturday. Another alien story, Robert Rodriguez’s The Faculty, lands on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The 1998 sci-fi horror film Hidden Gem starred numerous people who went on to become very famous, such as Josh Hartnett, Elijah Wood, Famke Janssen, Salma Hayek and, for some reason, Usher. Plus it’s the perfect way to honor the late, great Piper Laurie.

Then on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. the wonderful Babcock’s Haunting comes to an end. But to soften the blow, they do so with the best film of the entire series, 1961’s The Innocents. The film adaptation of Henry James’s novel The Turn of the Screw, starring Deborah Kerr, was directed by Jack Clayton from a brilliant script by Truman Capote. Beautifully shot in CinemaScope, this is one of those films you’ve always wanted to see on the big screen but never thought it would be possible.

Musician/photographer/illustrator/writer/jack-of-all-trades Mary Kate Teske brings her gritty country-western tunes to one of the city’s coolest music venues: the lobby of the Billings Public Library. Teske and her band, which includes her wife Ali, a vocalist and clarinetist, perform from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21. The show is free and open to the public because it takes place in the library, which is probably off-limits. charge an entrance fee. This seems counterintuitive to the whole library thing. And hey, you might as well come early, the best of the millions of TikTok viewers, Teske, will appear.

If you’re just not in the Halloween spirit this year, start Christmas early by catching a cappella group Straight No Chaser at the Alberta Bair Theater at 7:30pm on Saturday, October 21st. If candy and kitschy skulls aren’t your thing and you want to tap into something a little more ancient this Halloween, head to Kirks Grocery Store at 7:00 pm on Thursday, October 26th for the Samhain Serenade (if you’re not feeling up to it). The event, which they’re calling “a night of music, candles and crystals,” will use the venue’s low lighting to create an eerie and cozy atmosphere that makes ancient traditions seem modern. Features music by Mandy Castro, Lindsay Jacobsen and Sophia Reitsel of Salt & Shadow, as well as Tara Peake playing the so-called sound bowl. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

The Great Norrine, Queen of Outlaws, is a mainstay of the Billings country scene and has been playing here since the 1940s. But since Norrin turned 93 in June, she no longer gives many concerts. So some friends bring her a show. On Thursday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m., head to Skyline Heights Healthcare Nursing Home (1807 24th St. W., formerly Bella Terra) for a Norrine the Outlaw Queen jam full of friends, food and music.

Join 7th Avenue Band at the R Club at the Billings Hotel on Friday, October 20th from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm.

Three bands will perform at the Kirk on Friday starting at 7 p.m., with sets from One more night, Mender And Henry Cook. $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
