“I’m actually living this fantasy that I’ve had my whole life,” Sivan tells PEOPLE about his third album, “Something to Give Each Other.”

Troye Sivan’s many experiences in adulthood prompted him to record his new album. Something to give each other — and for that he is grateful.
“I think I’ll look back on this album and this time in my life so fondly,” Sivan told PEOPLE at Spotify’s early listen party for the record, which dropped Friday in partnership with the GLOW initiative at Outer Heaven in New York City.
Since the Australian pop star officially entered the music scene in 2014, listeners have learned about his personal life and emotions through his albums. Blue area And Blossom. But the new 10-track album is undoubtedly his most personal, as it provides insight into the series of sexual encounters Sivan took part in after the end of his last long-term relationship.

Even though Sivan was more vulnerable than ever in the new songs, he felt that the writing process came naturally to him. “I can look back on my life in these albums almost like diaries over a period of time, and this album reflects where I’ve been for the last couple of years,” he explains. “It’s nice to be able to look back and say, ‘Oh, I think the last couple of years have been really joyful and full of love in so many different ways.’ Honestly, it didn’t take much thought.”
Earlier this year, Sivan launched Something to give each other Era with its lead single “Rush”, a sexually charged dance-pop track released alongside a music video set at an erotic Berlin party – complete with nudity, make-out sessions and a singer looking into a glory hole. Since then, he stripped off in a steam room in the video for his second single, “Got Me Started,” and dressed as a woman to give Ross Lynch a lap dance in his third video, “One of Your Girls.”
Over the past few years, unabashed queerness has entered mainstream music with racy hits like Lil Nas’ material. He didn’t feel any worry about his sensual nature, and rightfully so, as his mostly LGBTQ+ fans immediately embraced it.
“From writing the album to creating the visuals to releasing it, everything just became a lot more fun,” he says. “Maybe because this is my third time doing this, I feel a little more relaxed.”

Another reason why Sivan feels comfortable sharing Something to give each other? Its elements of sexual and romantic freedom remain a reflection of his life to date, even after its release. “I’m just working harder because we’re releasing an album—that’s the only difference,” he quips. “I’m still very passionate about all the themes on the album, feeling really connected to myself and to other people and open to the world.”
Sivan’s supporters are enthusiastically following every development in his adult music career, in part because they have been following his journey since he came out as gay on YouTube in 2013. It was a part of their career he would never forget. connection as he still looks back on those years to inspire his craft.

“I definitely think I made this album for a younger version of myself, maybe even younger, maybe when I was seven,” says Sivan, who was inspired by coming of age “mega-pop stars” such as Janet Jackson, Madonna and Britney Spears. “I wanted to be a singer so badly.”
He remembers being particularly pensive while filming the “Got Me Started” video. “When I’m dancing on a rooftop in Bangkok with 30 dancers in disco costumes, I’m giggling to myself because I’m saying, ‘Oh God, I wish the little girl could see me.’ This is really for him,” explains Sivan. “I’m actually living this fantasy that I’ve had all my life. I think he would be very excited and proud.”
