It happened today

On September 1, 1715, at the remarkable age of 77, the Sun King died at Versailles “without any effort, like an extinguished candle.” Louis Dieudonnet de Bourbon was crowned King of France on June 7, 1654 at Reims Cathedral. he had sat on the throne of Libya for just under 19 years when he was overthrown in a coup d’état on September 1, 1969. The ruler was in Turkey: a military group – the “Movement of Free Union Officers” – quickly took control of the government, abolished the monarchy and proclaimed a republic. The coup was essentially bloodless. The rebels were led by a young officer (who soon appointed himself a colonel): Muammar Gaddafi. Sant’Egidio, hermit.
