The National Revolutionary Assembly decided that the old Parisian palace, built in the Middle Ages by Philip II Augustus and then enlarged over the centuries, should become a museum. It was August 10, 1793: The Louvre, which had housed the Academy of Inscriptions and Belle Literature for a hundred years, opened its doors to the public for the first time. Inside was a collection of over 500 works, most of which had been confiscated from the royal family or the church. And that was just the beginning. Also on August 10, 1846, U.S. President James K. Polk signed legislation establishing the Smithsonian Institution. He was born at the initiative of the British scientist James Smithson, who bequeathed much of his legacy to the United States “for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge among the people.” Today, the Institute operates 19 museums in various US states and has approximately 142 million items.
