Between the main roles in Point breaks And Speed in the early 1990s, his iconic portrayal of Neo in the cyberpunk series Matrix and his full role as the main character John WickKeanu Reeves has cemented his place as one of Hollywood’s most important action stars. Although Reeves is most at home in sci-fi landscapes and neo-noir thrillers, he has also tried his hand at a number of other genres.
He starred in Stephen Herek’s sci-fi comedy. Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure in 1989 and the same year starred in the family comedy “Parents.” He became the romantic leading man opposite Sandra Bullock in Lake houseand more than ten years after they collaborated in Speed. While he seems willing to delve into any genre, there is one area of film that Reeves has only ever delved into cautiously. The first film Reeves called was his own, a psychological horror film by Winding Refn. Neon Demon. Starring Elle Fanning, Jena Malone and Christina Hendricks, the film explores the imagined horrors of the Los Angeles modeling industry, plagued by cannibalism, narcissism and necrophilia. With stunning cinematography and a stunning score, Reeves plays a motel owner in a stylish and unsettling modern take on the genre.
At the time, Reeves shared his desire to delve into darker and more obscure films with Collider, stating, “I think I recently got the opportunity. And I’ve always been a fan of Nicholas’ films. I was very happy to work on the script he developed.”
Reeves’ only other serious horror offering was a supernatural classic from another of his previous collaborators. Evil Dead, directed by Sam Raimi and released in 1981. The classic horror film follows a group of friends who go on a cabin trip that ends in disaster as the group members gradually become possessed. Nearly two decades after the horror classic’s release, Reeves collaborated with Raimi on Presentstarring alongside Cate Blanchett.
In addition to his recommendations for horror classics and a modern take on the genre, Reeves also highlighted a film that satirizes it, the 1974 horror parody. Young Frankenstein.
Reeves’ latest roles saw him return to his comfort zone, starring in sequels Matrix, Bill and Ted And John Wick, all in the last three years. His huge army of fans around the world would be interested in Reeves venturing into the horror genre again.
