Flu vaccination recommended for all children
Although autumn has not yet arrived in the Islands, without vaccinations, the threat of respiratory infections such as influenza becomes a reality, especially in minors, once the temperatures drop. This year, health authorities are paying particular attention to coronavirus, influenza and bronchiolitis.
Luis Ortigos, a pediatrician and member of the Canary Islands Vaccine Technical Group, warns us. “Let us know” children aged six months to five years have received funding and free vaccinations. “Vaccines work, COVID vaccines work, flu vaccines work, monoclonal antibodies work.”
Monoclonal antibodies are not vaccines. They are proteins produced when the immune system detects an antigen. This is a novel treatment that is already being administered to all infants under 6 months of age in almost all autonomous regions.
Low flu vaccination rates cause concern
The vaccination campaign has begun but response from the population has been low, leading the Canary Islands’ vaccine technical group to insist on the importance of vaccinating young children to prevent such infections. Prevention has an impact on our health, which helps reduce the saturation of primary care and emergency services.
