Venice 80: come and discover the full program

“80 years of an exhibition looking to the future, which always knows how to live in the historical events that distinguish it.” How Robert CicuttoPresident of the Venice Biennale Foundation, determines the Venice Film Festival whose 80th edition will be held from from August 30 to September 9. An extraordinary journey into the seventh art awaits us with an exciting main program.

“The impact on Mostre is ultimately modest, the only film we lost was the first film (The Pretenders by Luca Guadagnino, which was pushed back to spring 2024. A few stars are missing, but the actors are independent productions,” says artistic director Alberto Barbera .

Before getting acquainted with the official program of Venice 80, we note the preliminary opening on August 29, which will be dedicated to the great Gina Lollobrigida (disappeared in January of last year). On the big screen you can again see, in a restored version, “Portrait of Gina” by Orson Welles and “Province” by Mario Soldati.

Films participating in the competition

The first film of the competition “Venice-80”, which will be presented to the public, will be Commander Edoardo De Angelis, chosen as the new opening film: at the center is the true story of Commander Salvatore Todaro, who during the Second World War saved the lives of sailors who survived the sinking of an enemy merchant ship. Interpret it – Pierfrancesco Favino.

Other Italian films eligible for the Golden Lion: Aeneas Pietro Castellitto and with him (the cast also includes Benedetta Porcaroli, Sergio Castellitto and Matteo Branchamor), Finally dawn Saverio Costanzo (with Lily James, Alba Rohrwacher, Willem Dafoe) Ljubo Giorgio Rights (with Franz Rogowski and Valentina Belle) I am the captain Matteo Garrone (with Seydou Sarr and Mustafa Fall) e Slowly Stefano Sollima (with Pierfrancesco Favino, Toni Servillo, Valerio Mastandrea, Adriano Giannini).

These are undoubtedly one of the most anticipated international titles. Owner Bradley Cooper and with him (also starring Carey Mulligan, Matt Bomer, Maya Hawk) and Priscilla Sofia Coppola (with Kaylie Spaeny): The first is about Leonard Bernstein and the second is about Priscilla Presley. Various nuances out of competition

No less interesting is the out-of-competition program, which includes, among other things, a special screening of the documentary film “The Lion’s Share: The History of the Exhibition” by Batista Echegaray and Giuseppe Buchi.

And we know that the documentary genre, as always, is given a lot of space at the festival, so in the official selection we find: “Love” by Virginia Eleuteri Serpieri, “Guernica Front” by Yervant Dzhanikyan and Angela Ricci Luchka, “Hollywoodgate” by Ibrahim Nash. ‘V

Ryuichi Sakamoto Opus Neo Sora (the artist’s son resumes the last concert of his father, who died in March), Enzo Giannacci Vengo, also Giorgio Verdelli, and Menu Pleziers – Les Troisgros by Frederic Wiseman.

Venice will also host the world premiere of two series: D’argent et de sang by Xavier Giannoli, Frédéric Planchon (with Vincent Lindon) and I Know Your Soul directed by Alen Drlevich with Nermin Hamzagic.

Then we move on to the artistic part of “Out of Competition”, where the film of the closing of the Exhibition takes the first place. Snow Society J. A. Bayona. Make way for new works by other great directors: Coupe de chance Woody Allen, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar Wes Anderson (with Ralph Fiennes and Benedict Cumberbatch) Castle Romana Polanski (with Oliver Masucci, Fanny Ardant, Luca Barbareschi, Fortunato Cerlino, Mickey Rourke), Hitman Richard Linklater (with Glen Powell) e Kane Mutiny Court Martial William Friedkin (with Kiefer Sutherland) or the last film of a recently deceased American director.

The latest title will not be the only posthumous one: Pema Tseden also died a few days after finishing work on the Snow Leopard, which we will see in Venice.

Italy out of competition is represented by Liliana Cavani (who will also be awarded the Golden Lion for outstanding service) with Order of time (starring Alessandro Gassman and Claudia Gerini), Luca Barbareschi with Penitent and Leonardo Di Costanzo Welcome to Paradise.

The long-awaited choice completes the choice Agro Dr1ft Harmony Korine (with Jordi Molla and Travis Scott), Vivants Alix Delaporte, Yeah! Quentin Dupier and The Making of Cedric Kahn.

New horizons of cinema

Also featured in this 80th edition of the exhibition is the competition section of Orizzonti, a wonderful mix of experimentation and more or less new names. A cielo abierto by Mariana and Santiago Arriaga, El Paraiso by Enrico Maria Artale (with Edoardo Pesce), Beyond the Mountains by Mohamed Ben Attia, Red Suitcase by Fidel Devkota, Tatami by Gaja Nattiva and Zara Amira Ebrahimi, Paradise is Burning by Mick Gustavson, Pulegves by Robert Kolodny, Invelle by Simone Massi, Wound of Hesitation by Selman Nakar, Heartless by Nara Normanda and Tiao, Endless Sunday by Alain Parroni. And again: “City of the Wind” by Lhagvadulam Purev-Ochira, “Explaining Everything” by Gabor Reis, “Gasoline Rainbow” by Bill and Turner Ross, “En escort la nuit” by Celine Rouze, “House Cleaning for Beginners” by Goran Stolevski “Shadow of Fire” by Shinya Tsukamoto, Dormitory Nehir Tuna.

Instead, the public will choose the winning film from among the Orizzonti Extra contestants. Among them is the directorial debut of Micaela Ramazzotti with Happiness (starring Max Tortora, Anna Galiena, Matteo Olivetti, Michaela Ramazzotti, Sergio Rubini). Other titles: “Bota Jones” by Luana Byrami, “Forever Forever” by Anna Buryachkova, “Salvation” by Daniela Goji, “Day of Struggle” by Jack Huston (with Michael Pitt), “In the Land of Saints and Sinners” by Robert Lorenz (with Liam Neeson), Pet Shop Boys by Olmo Schnabel (with Willem Dafoe and Emmanuelle Seigner), Stolen by Karan Teipal and L’homme d’argine by Anais Tellenne.

As a reminder, Orizzonti also has a mini section dedicated to short films, with thirteen titles from all over the world.

Classics in competition

The Venice 80 program, as we told you, is really intense and has many sections (let’s not forget, for example, Biennale College and Venice Immersive dedicated to the virtual world), but we absolutely cannot ignore Venice Classics, where we also find a competition documentaries dedicated to the world of cinema.
