The Poor Causes Award contender will open EnergaCamerimage, a film festival dedicated to cinematography, taking place in Toruń, Poland, November 11-18.
The film by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos (“Doortooth,” “The Lobster”) starring Emma Stone received the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan, who shot the film, will be presenting Poor Folks at Camerimage.

Lanthimos and Ryan previously worked on The Favorite, which competed for the Camerimage Golden Frog Award in the festival’s main competition in 2018 and won the Audience Award. “The Favorite” received 10 Oscar nominations, including best picture, director and cinematography.
In addition to The Favorite, Lanthimos had two other films competing for an Oscar: Dogtooth (2008) and The Lobster (2015).
In keeping with the eccentricity of Lanthimos’s other films, Poor People traces the evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone, who also produced), a young Victorian woman saved from death by suicide by the brilliant scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter. (played by Willem Dafoe). Bella runs away with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and lecherous lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure seeking self-discovery and sexual liberation.
Lanthimos directed Poor People from a screenplay by Tony McNamara based on Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel of the same name. The film also stars Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott and Jerrod Carmichael.
Searchlight Pictures will release Bad Things in the US on December 8th.
