Claire Civello was born in Rome and discovered music there. At the age of 18, he left the capital for America to enter the Berklee College of Music. She becomes the first Italian artist in history to debut on the legendary label Verve Records under the production of Russ Titelman: Crescent (2005) contains seven songs written by her and three in collaboration with other artists. The ballad Trouble was written in four hands by Burt Bacharach, a real monument in the history of music.
Second album space between (2007) produced by Steve Addabbo for Emarcy/Universal Jazz and Classic shows a more intimate side Claire Civello. A journey through 13 songs including Night and One Step After Another. “This is a disk in space. The space between notes, the pauses between words, the space between you and me… the space that makes you perceive reality better, the space that makes you miss someone.”
If you look for yourself in the first disk and collect yourself in the second, then in the third you begin to find yourself. And in fact 7752 has an exact geographic meaning. The figure is a straight line in kilometers connecting two key cities of the disk: New York, the city in which Claire Civello she lives for years, and Rio, the one that changes her life: it is there in 2008 that she begins her collaboration with Ana Carolina, a Brazilian pop star and her main collaborator in writing this album. Written between Rio, Trastevere and New York, 7752 has an exceptional cast: Marc Ribot on guitar, Jacques Morelenbaum on cello, Mauro Refosco on drums. The recording brings out the more pop side of Chiara’s voice, free, spontaneous, ironic, in a happy alchemy between 60s rock, Italian melody, Brazilian harmony and R&B. 7752 De Luxe Edition, 2010 reissue, contains unpublished Tre (written with Rocco Papaleo).
In 2012 Claire Civello participates for the first time in the Sanremo Festival in the BIG category with the song Instead of the world. At the same time, the fourth self-titled album of unreleased songs was released. The song Problemi in the Portuguese version of Problemas wins the award for the best song of 2012 in Brazil. The recognition was unanimously awarded by the Brazilian People’s Jury.
On the fifth studio album Songs (2014) Claire Civellopresents itself in the unedited guise of a single interpreter, plunging into that wondrous ocean that is Italian music: a disc of elegant-sounding love songs that mixes Northern Soul with Bossa Nova, Blue Eyed Soul with jazz and international pop. Many unusual guests: Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque, Ana Carolina and Esperanza Spaulding. The orchestral arrangements are written by the legendary Yumir Deodato (arranger for Sinatra/Jobim, Björk and Roberta Flack) and DJ producer Nicola Conte creates the perfect blend of modern and international musical sensibility and the vibrant depth of analog sound. “This is the record I wanted to make, with the songs I wanted to write and with a sound that winks at the past but looks to the future. Gil, Chico, Eumir, Nicola, Ana, Esperanza pay homage to Italian music with an absolutely breathtaking freshness.”
Eclipse this is the sixth album and it still gives us something new and different. All the elements that have always characterized his music are present, but the nuances are unprecedented, also thanks to the brilliant production of Mark Collin (aka Nouvelle Vague). Among the guests are Francesco Bianconi from Baustel, Cristina Dona, Diego Mancino, Pippo Caballa, the young songwriters Dimartino and Diana Tejera, the great Brazilian musicians Pedro Sa and Rubinho Jacobina. All under the good star of cinematic offerings.
Summer 2018 Claire Civello participates as a special guest, also playing piano, along with Cape Verdean singer Maira Andrade and accordionist Mestrinho on the Gilberto Gil Refavela 40 tour to celebrate the album’s fortieth anniversary. Refavela, recorded by Gil in 1977 after a trip to Nigeria, where the singer first came into contact with the Afrobeat and met Fela Kuti. The tour visited 14 European cities, including jazz festivals in Arles, Montreaux, Umbria Jazz, Jazz in Vienne Berlin and the Barbican Center in London.
Chansons: Chiara Civello sings international French standards, released in November 2021, this time Chiara interprets 12 classics from 1945 to 1975 written by French songwriters. From Michel Legrand to Charles Aznavour through Charles Trenet, Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Gilbert Bécaud and Francis Ley: the names are familiar to French-speaking music lovers, but less so to the general international public; songs that crossed the borders of their homeland without the general public knowing about their belonging to French musical history. Songs that go from shadow to light here. Who would have thought that “Feelings”, “The Good Life” or “My Way” were signed by French authors? Recorded works by Frank Sinatra, Julio Iglesias, Elvis Presley, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Luciano Pavarotti, Celine Dion, Dalida, Sex Pistols or Cayetano Veloso have won international success.
