Will Smith spoke to The New York Times after Jada Pinkett Smith opened up about the end of their relationship.
After that Jada Pinkett Smith publicly announced his marital relationship with Will Smith they got to the point where they were separated already in 2016, the actor himself wanted to speak out through The New York Times.

According to Will Smith, his former life partner’s recent words somehow “awakened” him, opening his eyes to the person who was truly in front of him. And he added:
I realized that Jada had lived a more intense life than I could have ever imagined. She is resilient, smart and compassionate.

I think by 2016 we were just tired of trying. I think we’re both still stuck in our fantasies of what we think the other person should be like. I promised that we would never have any reason to divorce. And I failed to keep this promise.
