When the time comes to renew your wardrobe, the first step is to find a passe-partout accessory that is both cool, captivating and versatile, in line with trends and easy to match. This is how tights, declined in every material and palette, have become the obsession of 2023: initially presented on the spring-summer catwalks in September (2022), they have just been re-elected protagonists of the collections dedicated to the winter season. And of course icons and trendsetters like Hailey Bieber, Dua Lipa, Vittoria Ceretti and Kylie Jenner have already started wearing them 24/7.
Thinking of the first collections focused on ultra-long stockings – black, nude, coloured, fishnet or decorated, the first thing that comes to mind is that of the «no pants» by Bottega Veneta, which went viral when Kendall Jenner wore it in real life on a warm and sunny Los Angeles morning. Dolce&Gabbana and Nensi Dojaka also imagined contemporary women in lingerie dresses and sheer black tights, while Maximilian Davis bet everything on red by coordinating opaque red tights with an entire Ferragamo look. At Valentino, Pierpaolo Piccioli has taken the trend to the next level, creating crystal and ruby encrusted hosiery or all over branded silhouettes to bring the extraordinary fashion of the 80s. Even Alessandro Michele, for the last act of his mandate at the helm of Gucci, had introduced animal print tights.
The certainty that long socks are and will be the accessory of 2023 arrived during the fashion month dedicated to the collections for next autumn/winter: from New York to Paris, via London and Milan, there are many brands that have continued to work on the endless declinations of the accessory. Dolce&Gabbana and N°21 bring back the timeless peek-a-boo black, David Koma still focuses on red, opaque or see-through, Virginie Viard by Chanel on white lace; while the women of Miu Miu, including Emma Corrin and Mia Goth, rediscover the divisive flesh-colored sheer stockings, charging them with a new light (given by silver zippers and golden culottes).
