As anticipated by Deadline, The Bluff is an epic adventure that will see pirates and buccaneers face off against each other on a 19th century Caribbean island. The island is inhabited by Ercell (Zoe Saldana), herself a retired pirate, and her people. Ercell will be forced back into action to defend her land and its people from vicious invaders who seek retributive justice for the pirate’s past sins. The project was originally intended for Netflix, however, for some unknown reason, it flowed into the ongoing EFM market in Berlin, where the rights were quickly snapped up by Prime Video following a rather turbulent auction.

According to early reports, The Bluff was explicitly written for Zoe Saldana, which isn’t surprising given that the Avatar star has shown a preference for action roles. The project will further expand the Russos’ relationship with Prime Video: the producers are already developing the spy drama Citadel and a limited series about the scandal involving FTX and cryptocurrencies for the streamer.

Joe Ballarini will develop the script for The Bluff with Frank E. Flowers, who will direct the project. Flowers previously worked with Saldaña on the 2004 crime film Haven which, like The Bluff, was set in the Cayman Islands. “For Zoe and I, who hail from the Caribbean, The Bluff is an opportunity to blend culture and authenticity with the Russos’ brand of world-class cinematic action, creating a film audiences have never seen before.”Flowers said. In addition to starring, Zoe Saldaña will produce the project alongside her sisters Mariel Saldaña and Cisely Saldaña for Cinestar.

We will find Zoe Saldana for the last time in the role of Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the third and final chapter of the Marvel saga to be released in Italian cinemas on May 3rd.
