Michael Jordan bought seven cars after signing with the Chicago Bulls in 1984, but kept just one black Mercedes. Jordan was 21 when the Bulls drafted him third overall that year out of North Carolina.
In 2017, Dallas trial attorney Don Godwin shared the story of how his father, Lewis, sold seven cars to young MJ in an interview with D Magazine. Lewis worked at a car dealership in Jordan’s hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina.

Lewis Godwin was shocked that Michael Jordan bought a car for himself and his family. Godwin knew how quickly athletes spent their money and tried to convince Jordan to consider his purchase.
However, the future Chicago Bulls legend is confident in his chances of making it big in the NBA. He also wanted to repay Godwin for his efforts in helping his father when he was growing up.
“My dad went back to Michael and told him he didn’t mean any disrespect,” Don Godwin said.
“He just wanted to make sure the family was happy with everything, and Michael said, ‘I understand, Mr. Lewis. But I want you to get a great deal. Jordan also turned his love of cars and racing into a career, founding 23XI Racing with Denny Hamlin. His NASCAR team has racked up five race wins since 2021 and counting. Currently, the company has three full-time drivers and one part-time driver.
