Godmother

The prestige of the 80th Venice Film Festival is further enhanced by the choice of a godmother, Caterina Murino. The Sardinian actress, with her talent and charm, will host the opening and closing evenings of the Venice International Film Festival. The opening ceremony will take place on June 30, 2023 in the evocative Sala Grande Palazzo del Cinema, and on September 9, at the same location, Caterina Murino will preside over the closing ceremony, announcing the winners of the prestigious Golden Lion and other awards.

As we prepare to open titles in the competition, it is worth noting that some of the films out of competition will also attract the attention of the public. Jury

The Venice Film Festival 2023 boasts a diverse and prestigious jury of internationally renowned talent. The jury of the official competition is headed by the famous American director Damien Chazelle, known for such masterpieces as La La Land. Alongside him we see talented Palestinian actor Saleh Bakri, New Zealand director Jane Campion, who made history by winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes for Piano in 1993, and French director Mia Hansen-Löwe. The presence of the talented Italian director and actor Gabriele Mainetti, best known for My Name is Jig Robot and The Freaks, gives the jury a touch of national pride. Complementing the group are Irish screenwriter Martin McDonagh, Argentine screenwriter/director Santiago Mitre, American director Laura Poitras, and charming Chinese actress Shu Qi.

The experimental section of Orizzonti also has a high-level jury chaired by Jonas Carpignano. Working with him are personalities such as Kauter Ben Hania, Kalil Joseph, Jean-Paul Salome and Trisha Tuttle, who will help select the most innovative and creative works for the exhibition.

Venice’s first film award “Luigi De Laurentiis” – “The Lion of the Future”, awarded to the first works of emerging directors, will be judged by a competent jury headed by director Alice Diop. Together with her experts like Faouzi Bensaidi, Laura Citarella, Andrea De Sica and Chloe Domon will choose the best of the new film talents.

The prizes awarded by the jury of the Venice Film Festival 2023 are of great importance on the international film scene. Among the most coveted awards are the Golden Lion for Best Film, the Silver Lion for the Grand Jury Prize, the Silver Lion for Best Director, the Volpi Cups for Best Actress and Actor, the Special Jury Prize and the Prize for Best Screenplay.
