And it looks like we’re not the only ones doing this; famous people also exaggerate their respective skills. For example, Anne Hathaway once lied slightly about her abilities to get one of her most notable roles, in Ang Lee’s 2005 neo-Western romantic drama film. Brokeback Mountain.
The film, which also starred Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Williams, was an adaptation of Annie Proulx’s 1997 short story of the same name. With its innovative portrayal of love between two cowboys, the 2005 film quickly established itself as a timeless classic.

As part of a ten-year retrospective of the groundbreaking film Outside spoke with the Oscar-winning actress in 2015, where she recalled a turning point in the audition process, saying:
“When I left the audition, the last thing Ang said was, ‘Oh, by the way, can you ride a horse?’ My parents have given me many gifts in my life and one of them is: if you are ever asked if you can do something, say yes. You can learn anything in two weeks if you are motivated enough. So I’d never been on a horse and I said, “Oh yeah, I’m a really good rider.” So I knew I had to learn how to skate, and I got really, really, really good at it.”
Moreover, during rehearsal, she embarrassed herself in front of several cast and crew members, as she further added (via Out):
“On set they gave me a horse without telling me it was a verbal command horse, so I couldn’t figure out how to get it to ride. And I went to rehearsal in front of 300 extras, all of whom work at the rodeo, and the horse didn’t do a damn thing what I wanted. And in the end I was abandoned in front of everyone.”

Movies similar to Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain gave Anne Hathaway the challenging roles she was looking for. Ironically, the 68-year-old Taiwanese director once recalled how the actress got the role during filming. Princess Diaries 2.

“With Anne Hathaway, I didn’t really know her work. At the Universal audition site, the casting director told me that the next actress to come to the reading was going to apologize for her clothes and makeup, but he just let her do it and went to the reading. Then Anne walked in, heavily made up and dressed like a princess because she was filming the parade scene for The Princess Diaries 2 on the Universal lot. She used her lunch break to audition for the role.”
