Actors Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis have publicly apologized for letters they wrote to a judge in defense of their That ’70s Show co-star Danny Masterson, who was accused of raping three girls.

Acting couple Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis have publicly apologized for writing letters in defense of their That ’70s Show co-star Danny Masterson, who was then convicted of rape. We have achieved this historically through our work and will continue to do so in the future.” adds Kunis, who sits next to her husband Kutcher in the video. The actor then explains how Masterson’s family contacted him and Kunis to write these letters for “.represent a person we have known for 25 years“.

“The letters were not written to question the legitimacy of the justice system or the validity of the jury’s decision.– Kunis declares, and her husband adds: “They were intended to be read by the judge and were not intended to undermine the victims’ testimony or in any way re-traumatize them. We never wanted to do this and we regret that this happened.“.

Letters
Kutcher and Kunis weren’t the only ones to write letters defending Masterson to the judge in his sexual assault case. In fact, more than 50 people have done the same, with That ’70s Show stars including Debra Jo Rapp, who played Kitty on the Fox sitcom, and Kurtwood Smith, who played Red. An excerpt from Kutcher’s letter reads: “Danny takes his job seriously. He is kind, polite and hardworking. He treats everyone, from professionals to actors to restaurateurs, as equals. As a role model, Danny has always been a great role model…“. In a letter from his wife, the actress defines Masterson as “An amazing friend, confidante and most importantly an amazing big brother. His genuine concern for others and desire to lead by example make him an exceptional role model and friend.“.

Masterson was sentenced to 30 years in prison Thursday and will be eligible for parole when he turns 77. Following Kutcher and Kunis’ video, one of Masterson’s victims criticized the couple’s apology, commenting: “This video was incredibly offensive and hurtful. I hope they understand radical responsibility and the importance of educating themselves to learn how to control their privilege – especially Ashton, who claims to work on behalf of victims of sex crimes. As for Mila, all I can think about is Times Up.“.
