L’Algeria banned the popular Barbie movie three weeks after its release in the Muslim-majority North African country. The Ministry of Culture has asked cinemas to immediately remove the Hollywood blockbuster: according to an official source told the BBC, the feature film is accused of promoting homosexuality and disrespect for the country’s religious and cultural beliefs.

The news website 24H Algérie reported that the film was officially banned for “pecuniary damage”, despite the fact that tickets to screenings in theaters across the country have sold out every day since its release.
