L’Algeria banned the popular Barbie movie three weeks after its release in the Muslim-majority North African country. The Ministry of Culture has asked cinemas to immediately remove the Hollywood blockbuster: according to an official source told the BBC, the feature film is accused of promoting homosexuality and disrespect for the country’s religious and cultural beliefs.

The news website 24H Algérie reported that the film was officially banned for “pecuniary damage”, despite the fact that tickets to screenings in theaters across the country have sold out every day since its release. Algeria is not the first country in the Arab world to criticize the film: Kuwait last week banned Barbie to protect “public ethics” after Lebanon also banned screenings over accusations by the government of “propaganda of homosexuality.”

Starring actors Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the film is a coming-of-age story based on the famous doll in which Barbie travels to the real world and explores her identity.
