Caroline Wozniacki says she came to the 2022 US Open to support Serena Williams, adding that seeing her good friend play at Flushing Meadows last year did not sit well with her The decision to return to professional tennis has no repercussions. Last year, tennis icon Williams played the final match of her career at the U.S. Open.
This summer, after retiring from tennis for three and a half years, the 33-year-old Wozniacki made a comeback and officially returned to professional tennis in Montreal. After defeating Jennifer Brady in the third round of the US Open, Wozniacki was asked if seeing Williams competing in the 2022 US Open would have any impact on her return to tennis.
Wozniacki: I’m here to support Williams, I’m not thinking about coming back
“Yeah, I’ve been talking to her. She’s obviously busy right now too. But we’ve been talking. She watched my game today. But last year I was pregnant.
I’m pregnant, I want to say – what, we’re in September – I’m eight months pregnant. I’m just here to support my friends. Obviously I worked at ESPN. I did a lot of reviews and research. I really wanted to support her in her final game.
That’s something very special. I wasn’t really thinking about my comeback at that point. I’m trying to figure out what to do with two kids (laughs). After James was born and I came on, I suddenly said, okay, let’s try this, this is cool.
Now that we’re here, it’s very special,” Wozniacki said.
2018 Australian Open champion Wozniacki performed very well in her first Grand Slam tournament after returning.
In her next match, Wozniacki will face Corey Gauff, one of the favorites to win the U.S. Open. When Wozniacki and 19-year-old Gauff meet, it will be their first meeting.
