Cleveland MetroHealth hosts first multicultural women’s health expo

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – MetroHealth hosted its inaugural Women’s Health Expo and Empowerment Expo on Saturday at the Huntington Convention Center in downtown Cleveland.

Doors opened at 11 a.m. and thousands of people poured in to enjoy free health screenings, training, labs, job fairs and even beauty and wellness services.

Many women said they were pleased to see such attention to their needs.

“I think it’s awesome. I’m really excited about it because, as one of the ladies at the booth said, who’s going to take care of the men? So if you take care of it from the top, everyone gets it from the bottom up Take care,” one woman said.

“This event really represents women’s interests and says ‘you are a valuable person, you matter, and you need to take care of yourself,'” said Dr. Christine Alexander, chair of family medicine and medical staff chair.

“The first step is to understand all the important aspects of taking care of yourself.”

The event offers community resources, health talks, a job fair, empowerment sessions, special guests, and free health screenings such as: general physicals, blood pressure, diabetes (A1C), hepatitis B and C, and more.

“Honestly, it’s really big,” Alexander said. “Too often, women in our families and communities put themselves last – because they are too busy taking care of everything for everyone else.”

“This is an opportunity to move them up the priority list.”
