Merida, Yucatan, July 31, 2023. – Cases of conjunctivitis in Yucatan have increased by 123.2% so far this year compared to the same period in 2022, according to the Epidemiological Bulletin of the National Epidemiological Surveillance System of the Federal Health Service Secretariat.
According to the document, as of epidemiological week 29 (ending July 22), 10,959 Yucatanians in the state had symptoms of irritation of the white conjunctiva due to allergies or bacterial infections or infectious viruses. Spread by contact with eye secretions.
Of the more than 10,000 registered cases, 5,188 were males and 5,771 were females, an increase of 123.2% compared to the same period last year (6 cases were reported), with a total of 050 patients suffering from this eye disease.
The Federal Secretariat of Health states that conjunctivitis caused by viruses or bacteria is contagious, but not conjunctivitis if the cause of the irritation is an irritant such as animal hair, an allergen such as dust, smoke, chlorine or ultraviolet rays. It is contagious like bacteria.
