The American singer-songwriter and actress Demi Lovato will soon add a third position, which is also very prestigious, to the two entries in her Curriculum Vitae: director. You will direct a feature film in the documentary genre which for now has the working title of Child Star. The film wants to tell “the ups and downs of growing up in the spotlight”, reads an official note. It will do so through the lens of some of the most famous former child stars, including Lovato herself (who also acts as a producer here).
The pop star will co-direct with Nicola Marsh (director who has dealt, among others, with Stay on Board: The Leo Baker Story And Song Exploder).
Michael D. Ratner, Kfir Goldberg and Miranda Sherman will produce for OBB Pictures, with Scott Ratner serving as executive producer. Lovato will also executive produce, alongside Braun, Scott Manson, Jennifer McDaniels and James Shin for SB Projects.
Lovato is represented by SB Projects, UTA and CCGG Law. Michael D. Ratner and OBB Media are represented by CAA and Barnes Morris Klein & Yorn. Marsh is represented by WME.
To produce the project there are therefore OBB Pictures by Michael D. Ratner, DLG by Lovato and SB Projects by Scooter Braun, three companies that have already worked together for a product deeply linked to Demi: Dancing With the Devilthe docuseries that tells about his life, career, torments and so on. Dancing With the Devilwhich premiered at SXSW in 2021, received critical acclaim for taking an up-close look at Lovato’s personal life and struggles with addiction, especially her near-fatal overdose in 2018.
Child Star (which, remember, is not the final title) will be streamed on Hulu in 2024. This streaming service is owned by Disney, where Lovato made her debut as a teenager in the Disney Channel Original Movie Camp Rock and on the TV show Sonny With a Chance. Demi Lovato recently criticized the modus operandi of Disney Channel, telling the podcast Call Her Daddy by Alex Cooper that the “workload (was) extreme.” The pop star said: “I think he put a lot of pressure on us (…). At 16-17 she was not healthy at all ”.

Demi Lovato said in an official statement that the subject matter of the documentary is the best with which I can debut as a director.
“There is no better film or subject for my directorial debut than this story, which is close to home,” Lovato stressed. “Our project sheds light on important messages about how to grow up in the public eye, learn to protect our borders and become active advocates of our destinies. I am honored to be able to learn from people who have had the unique experience of childhood stardom and to share their stories in our film.”

As anticipated by the same words of the co-director of the film, Child Star promises interviews with a certain number of former child stars, even if for now “participants are kept under strict control”, writes Ellie Shafer in an article that appeared in these hours on the American magazine variety.
