Emma Stone wasn’t exactly convinced to play powerful sex scenes in Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos’ new long-running film Pobres Criaturas. According to the director, there are enough reasons to enter so that the player does not run away from the risk.

The film is expected to be screened at the Venice Film Festival this December and will receive the Lean de Oro, the event’s main prize. Weighing critical reception, the candid images will show us how audiences left six months before the project began.

At the New York festival, Lanthimos explains that Stone’s Bella Baxter’s journey is one of self-discovery, and that sex is not fundamental to any process.

“It’s a very important part of the day. We believe that we should not avoid this,” he said. “It’s not serious or sincere to take the story of this character who is so open and alive, and who is so modest about his sexuality.”

The story, inspired by Alasdair Gray’s novel, sees Bella transformed from time to time by Godwin Baxter and decides to run away to explore the world in accordance with her freedom and sexuality. The list also includes Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael and Christopher Abbott.

“From the moment I arrived, it was clear that this was a serious dinner. From the book, walking past the wheel and talking with Emma. She clarified that if she was free, then she should not have any joy,” the director continued.

“Just as it learns about language, human suffering, love, science and politics, it should be a book about sex and everything it implies,” he concluded.
