In this way, the skin becomes the backdrop for names, memorable moments, or simply images that catch the eye.

According to Preply’s research, which analyzed the presence of tattoos on social media and online searches, names are at the top of the most popular tattoos rankings, with over 298,000 hashtags on Instagram and over 2.6 million searches per year on Instagram. Google.

The name usually belongs to the child, partner, or parent. In second place are individual letters, often representing the initials of a name, with a total of 2.2 million posts on Instagram and Google. In third place, instead of them, there are quotes, much more demanding both in the continuation of the tattoo and in the choice of the written sentence, trying to avoid mistakes. In fact, the citation reaches 87,400 Instagram posts and 896,640 Google searches per year. In fourth place are words that appear in 87,400 posts on Instagram: they are searched on Google 535,200 times a year.

There are those who decide to get a whole tattoo, and this tattoo is the fifth favorite with a total of 150,320 results on Instagram and Google.

But it is not enough to choose a phrase or spelling, for many it is also important to choose a language that can have an effect when seeing a tattoo on the skin. And it is no coincidence that the most quoted language is Japanese, which, with its special graphic characters, achieves more than 231,240 Google searches per year. It can be seen that the charm of oriental writing, and not a simple alphabet, conquers the preferences of the tattooed. This is followed by Chinese and Arabic.

Celebrities such as Selena Gomez, Angelina Jolie, and Rihanna have opted for the Arabic tattoo and hence popularized it. This is followed by tattoos in Latin, Korean, Greek, French and Spanish. But the Italian language also has its appeal as it ranks 9th with 19,080 searches every year worldwide. Persian is also in high demand among tattooed people as it is experiencing the biggest surge in popularity, with demand increasing by 312% year on year. Preply looked at search volumes for various celebrity tattoos to identify the celebrities who had the biggest influence on tattoos: Ariana Grande wins by far with 1,328,760 Google searches related to her tattoos.

But the risks of falling into error are not without: the search for Ariana Grande’s tattoos peaked in 2019, when fans noticed a mistake in the translation of her tattoo into Japanese, dedicated to her album “7 Rings”. The tattoo was mistranslated as “shichirin”, which means “small barbecue grill” in Japanese. A blunder but hard to fix when the ink reaches different layers of the skin. And in many cases, after enthusiasm comes remorse: more and more people are asking, in fact, how to get rid of that badly written word or that drawing that they simply cannot stand.

The country with the most tattoo regrets is the United States, where over a million searches are made on the Internet every year for tattoo removal or repair. In Italy, Milan leads the way with 6,720 requests a year to cancel a tattoo, followed by Rome and Turin.
