Former Spanish referee Xavier Estrada Fernández has shed a light on the power struggle that exists in Spain’s Serie A. As explained in the program “El Desmarque Mediodía”, Estrada did not whistle again at Real Madrid after expelling Cristiano Ronaldo.
The former referee talks about what it means to whistle against a strong team in the Spanish league: “Referees are conditional. Referencing a team close to you is not the same as refereeing a big team like Barcelona, Madrid or Atletico Madrid, ” Estrada said.
“If you make a mistake, the committee will sanction you, like Munuela Montero did in the last game when he just had a refrigerator,” the former referee explained.
“I have an example in 2009 when I sent off Cristiano Ronaldo and I didn’t referee Real Madrid again that season. You know there will be a media impact and you have to be very careful when making decisions,” said the former European football judge.
The game Estrada Fernandez was talking about was the match played by the Whites against Almeria in 2009. In that game, Cristiano took off his shirt and attacked his opponent, resulting in a double yellow card.
