Smithfield – People living in Johnston County can find free medical care at primary care clinics in Smithfield and Selma.
“No matter how long they’ve lived in the county, they’ll be cared for,” said Leah Johnson, a program coordinator at UNC Johnston Health.
This “Mobile Reach” program is available to uninsured people between the ages of 6 months and 65 years living in Johnston County.
The different ailments they treat include: allergies, asthma, colds, flu, coughs, diarrhea, ear problems, urinary problems in women, fevers, headaches, migraines, stomach pains, conjunctivitis, rashes, sinusitis, and sore throats.
They also serve people who already have diabetes and high blood pressure as well as those who are starting to experience symptoms.

La Pulga in Smithfield offers medical services every first Sunday of the month from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm at 2320 S. Brightleaf Blvd.
Health Professionals also offers a mobile clinic at Selma’s Harrison Gym, located at 601 W. Noble St., on the third Tuesday and last Thursday of each month from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Talking to Qué Pasa, Johnston said it was difficult to inform the community about the clinics because so few people came to the three clinics where they were being held.
However, nearly 60 percent of the patients they see are Hispanic, he said. A health representative believes that medical attention is required.
“We want to see more patients because there are services available, we want to see patients who are not feeling well and prevent these diseases,” Johnson said.
Once they participate, people are referred to the lab and given financial assistance if they need medication or equipment to measure blood sugar and stress.
