The Russos didn’t just want a sequel to The Gray Man. They needed a whole cinematic universe. Their impulse is understandable given the success they’ve had in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In July 2022, /Film reported that the Russos were looking to make a spin-off about a supporting player in The Gray Man named Avik San aka Lone Wolf, a character played by Tamil film superstar Dhanush. They also expressed interest in creating further sequels with the Sierra Six character, knowing that he had appeared in several of Greaney’s novels. The Russos sought to create a vast spy universe.
However, despite enthusiastic interest, not a single sequel was put into development. It seems the Russians were eager to build a universe, but had not yet figured out what the next practical step would be. Will The Gray Man 2 come first or will the Lone Wolf movie come first? How was this expanded universe supposed to…expand? The filmmakers certainly want more Gray Man films, but, well, if wishes were horses, etc. It’s entirely possible that any supposed delays to The Gray Man 2 are due to the filmmakers being involved in large-scale brainstorming phase.
However, make no mistake. As we speak, pen is put to paper.
Naturally, deals have yet to be concluded. Netflix’s Scott Stuber announced via ComicBook.com that Netflix will once again team up with Russo’s studio AGBO:

Russo and Netflix are committed to making a sequel.
