How eagerly the fans are waiting Knives Out 3a trickle of information about the threequel has begun to emerge.
Rian Johnson’s take on the murder mystery genre has been one of the breakout hits of the last decade.
After rave reviews for the first film and stellar box office returns (grossing $312.9 million worldwide), Johnson signed a $450 million, two-picture deal with Netflix. Knives out sequels, the first of which(Glass bow) entered service in 2022.
Starring Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc, and with talent including Ana De Armas, Chris Evans and Dave Bautista, Johnson appears to have stars lining up to be a part of these films. Hook– similar ensembles.
Knives Out 3 release: when will it be released?
Knives Out 3 is currently in development, but an exact release date has not yet been announced.
The upcoming threequel will be the final film in Rian Johnson’s current two-film deal with Netflix. Knives out sequels.
Johnson confirmed to Variety in January 2023 that he has “started working on the third film” but details beyond this remain scant:
“They seemed like the most interesting thing in the world. And we make these films primarily as entertainment. What was exciting about working on (Glass Onion) was the idea of trying to emulate Christie with a completely new story. Now I’m starting to work on the third film, and this has also inspired me creatively: I don’t need to copy the last film at all. The goal is to go in a completely new direction tonally and thematically.”
This comes a month after the director revealed what was in store for the film on Digital Spy. During this conversation, Johnson said Knives Out 3, “It’s not just turning a crank on someone else.” but does something that excites him creatively:
“This is not just the launch of another project. It’s something that feels challenging and exciting. And, my God, can we pull this off?” in a way it’s scary in a good way.”
What’s encouraging about the film’s potential release date is that Johnson confirms Knives out a threequel is his next film (although that’s not necessarily the case).
A conversation with Deadline shortly before this Glass bowrelease, the director said, “The most exciting creative thing for me right now is the third film.” This means fans won’t have to wait for Johnson to finish another film before watching it. Knives Out 3:
“The most exciting creative thing for me right now is the third film. So, I think I’m going to jump right into it. Not because of contractual obligations, but honestly, it’s that shiny object that I believe is pointed by my nose. right now”.
he added, “I have a Moleskine notebook that I carry with me everywhere and I write in it all the time.” it would seem that the revelation of his creative process on the third film was just beginning:
“I have a Moleskine notebook that I carry with me everywhere and write things down all the time. For me, the first 80 percent of the process is writing in notebooks and structuring it all. upcoming.”
See how Knives out came out in 2020 and Glass bow three years later, in 2022, it is likely that Knives Out 3 will be released on Netflix sometime in late 2025.
But Netflix may want to make the film sooner, according to co-head of the streamer’s original studio film team Ori Marmur (via Variety):
“Ryan Johnson is already working on the third, but there is no clear schedule. We’d like to see it sooner rather than later, given the response to the last one.”
Of course, with writer and actor strikes in Hollywood, the release date may be in limbo as further development – and ultimately production – will have to be delayed until a solution is found.
Who will star in Knives Out 3?
Currently the only confirmed character for Knives Out 3 – the main character of the series, detective Benoit Blanc.
Daniel Craig’s eccentric Inspector was the only constant throughout the franchise’s two films, and that seems to have been intentional.
Certainly, Glass bow introduced Benoit’s husband Philippe (played by Hugh Grant), so he will likely return as well.
And Craig teased Grant’s role in the upcoming third film, telling Above the Line that he “of course (the character’s romantic life) will come into play:”
“If you watch the film, I think it’s done frankly. In terms of exploration, I mean, maybe, but with these films, I mean they’re not really about the detective’s sexuality. (But) it’s a little bit in the genre (where) the detective story takes place outside of the realm of the human drama that’s going on with the rest of the suspects, so I’m sure that will come into play because that’s obviously a big part of who he is. It’s just a fact about his character.”
As for the rest of the ensemble, fans shouldn’t expect any other familiar faces in Johnson’s next murder mystery.
When asked if she would return Knives Out 3, Glass bow actress Janelle Monáe said (via ET Canada) that she “It’s a great honor for me. But Ryan isn’t going to cast you if you’ve already done Knives Out:”
“It would be an honor for me. But Ryan won’t cast you if you’ve already done Knives Out, with the exception of Daniel Craig, because he’s supposed to be the detective Benoit Blanc who’s going to show up.”
And that’s consistent with Johnson’s previous comments about the franchise.
Speaking to Variety in October 2022, Johnson compared Knives out a series of novels by Agatha Christie in which each of Benoit Blanc’s mysteries takes place. “in a completely new location (with) a new cast:”
“If each of these events can truly be what Agatha Christie did, if it can take place not only in a completely new location and with a new cast, but also try something exciting, I will continue to do it until Daniel and I have a good time. I will continue to do this as long as they let me.”
While Knives Out 3 The cast remains largely a mystery, given the star power of the last two films, fans should expect even more A-listers to fill out Johnson’s next whodunit.
What will happen in Knives Out 3?
One of the best parts Knives out the franchise is how independent both previous films were.
The only constant between these films is Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc and the case that the fast-paced detective must solve. This makes it difficult to predict where Knives Out 3 I’ll go.
With some fans begging the franchise to become more international and set in some exotic foreign location, Johnson revealed that the third film would be “to be in America” (for insiders):
“I want this to happen in America. There are many temptations to go to Paris or the Alps, but I think it is very important that they are American films.”
Glass bow The action took place on a tropical island outside of American borders, so the director considers it important “(to bring) him back somewhere closer to home:”
“Even with ‘Glass bow“It’s set overseas, but it’s a group of Americans who are trapped on an island together, so bringing it back somewhere closer to home I think might be a good idea for the next movie.”
Knives out Star Chris Evan previously floated the idea for a third film, telling Comicbook.com (via Screen Rant) that he would love to see the cast of the first film return with their character, who was proven to be the killer in that film. reappearing with “A carefully thought out plan to destroy Benoit Blanc:”
“This can’t be like a redemption story. No one wants Ransom to find redemption. Maybe he’ll get out of jail thanks to some loophole for expensive lawyers. But then maybe he will succeed. Yeah, I mean, like Bob Sideshow, like, running for office. But this is an elaborate plan to actually destroy Benoit Blanc and Martha. This is revenge in plain sight. Do you understand what I mean?
Although it seems unlikely that the entire cast Knives Out 1 could reprise their roles in the upcoming threequel, Evans may be on to something.
In the first two films, Benoit Blanc was never the focus of a killer.
So it could be an interesting twist (which is how the show got its name) to instead of solving a murder that has already happened, bring Detective Craig into the case. Knives Out 3 hunt down the man who is trying to kill him.
