October is here again, which means another Mike Flanagan-created show has premiered on Netflix. This year marks the fourth time Flanagan has released a new game on the streaming service since the 2020s. The Haunting of Bly Manor2021st Midnight Massand 2022s Midnight Club. His last one Fall of the House of Usheris a gothic horror drama based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, which is another way of saying that it is the most cynical and nihilistic project Flanagan has ever created.
Visually, tonally, and narratively, the series is enticing and unique, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other shows that scratch the same itch as it does. With that in mind, for all the viewers who are about to finish Fall of the House of Usher or already have, here are five TV shows that offer many of the same pleasures as the creepy Netflix drama.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)

Fear not, this list won’t consist mostly or exclusively of Flanagan’s past projects. Considering how closely related Fall of the House of Usher this applies to many of the director’s previous efforts, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t recommend a few of them. Of all the TV shows he has created to date, none can match the dark storytelling and creepy spirit of the series. Fall of the House of Usher just like in 2018 The Haunting of Hill House. The series was the first episodic project Flanagan created with Netflix, and five years later, it’s still the scariest show the streaming service has ever produced.

Terror (2018)

Released the same year as The Haunting of Hill Housebut not as widespread as AMC Terror is one of the best episodic horror series of the last 10 years. While both seasons are worth watching, it’s Terrorthe debut season that fans will probably enjoy the most Fall of the House of Usher. The film is set in the mid-1800s and is a fictional account of the infamous failed Arctic expedition of one of the crew of the British Royal Navy. Terror The first season doesn’t boast the same contemporary satirical edge as Fall of the House of Usherbut it is just as cruel, bloody, atmospheric and terrifying.
Like Netflix’s latest horror series, TerrorThe first season also derives much of its suspense, drama, and tension from exploring the unexplained deaths of one group of people.
Castle Rock (2018)

Castle Rock has a lot in common with Fall of the House of Usher. The Hulu series is similarly inspired by the works of Stephen King. Fall of the House of Usher owes a debt to the stories and poems of Edgar Allan Poe, and like the new Netflix original, Castle RockThe first season centers around a mysterious, potentially supernatural figure who brings death and chaos wherever they go. Both seasons Castle Rock worth watching, but it’s the show’s debut season that has the most in common with Fall of the House of Usher.
This is a suspenseful, sometimes terrifying season of television with as much intrigue and suspense as Flanagan’s latest Poe-inspired offering.
Midnight Mass (2021)

It could be argued that all of Flanagan’s shows on Netflix are required viewing for anyone who enjoys them. Fall of the House of Usher. If the prospect of watching four horror series in a row seems too daunting, then newcomers to Flanagan’s work may feel confident giving Midnight Mass priority over his other limited series.
A seven-part thriller about a small island community that is shaken by the arrival of a mysterious new preacher. Midnight Mass offers as much gore, gothic horror and thematic depth as Fall of the House of Ushermaking it a must-watch for anyone who loves the latter show.
Death Rings (2023)

More than any other show Dead bell ringers boasts the same mixture of dark humor and grisly imagery as Fall of the House of Usher. Based on the body horror film of the same name directed by David Cronenberg. Dead bell ringers this is not such a simple genre experiment as Fall of the House of Usherbut it’s just as twisted, scary, exciting and unpredictable.
It stars Rachel Weisz as a pair of ambitious, identical gynecological twins. Dead bell ringers not for the faint of heart, but not Fall of the House of Usherand the two go together better than perhaps they should.
