Mexico declares H5N1 bird flu elimination

Mexico City, October 4, 2023.

arrive Mexico has eliminated chicken flu nearly a year after it began a vaccination campaign against bird flu in birds in high-risk areas.

The Ministry of Agriculture reports that this announcement will promote the marketing of live poultry originating in the country and its products and by-products.

It should be remembered that in October 2022, a few days after the first cases of this severe strain were notified to the World Organization for Animal Health (WHOSA), the virus was detected in a commercial farm with 60,000 birds in the state of Nuevo Leon.

To ensure that Mexico remains free of animal diseases, epidemiological surveillance, prevention, diagnosis, traceability and controls over the mobilization, transport, marketing and import of poultry, its products and by-products will continue to be maintained, the agency reported.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), commonly known as bird flu, has killed flocks of poultry in the United States and Europe since last year.

In South America, Brazil enacted a 180-day animal health emergency in May after detecting several cases, and Ecuador confirmed the presence of the virus in some birds in the Galapagos Islands in September.
