These are the richest people in America, and you probably have an opinion about each of them. While each may have outstanding business acumen and undeniable financial success, there is something that none of them possesses.
Six-time NBA championship. Or two dunk contest championship trophies. Or…you get it.
Former Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan is also famous for his Jordan shoe brand. Now he joins Musk, Bezos, Gates and others as the first athlete to enter the Forbes 400 list of the richest Americans.
Jordan is widely considered the greatest player in NBA history, ranking No. 379 on the Forbes 400 list, with an estimated net worth of $3 billion.
In June, the Charlotte, N.C., native sold his majority stake as owner of the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets for about $3 billion. He joined the Hornets’ ownership group in 2006, when the team was named the Charlotte Bobcats, and became a controlling partner of the team in 2010. In Jordan’s 13 seasons as majority owner, the Hornets made the NBA playoffs twice.
The six-time NBA Finals MVP has earned a total of $90 million in his career, but has since taken in $2.4 billion in pre-tax income from corporate partners such as Nike, Gatorade and Hanes, according to Forbes.
In addition, Jordan is an investor and special advisor to the board of directors of sports betting company DraftKings. In 2020, he also became co-owner of NASCAR team 23XI Racing.
In addition to being on the Forbes 400, Forbes gave Jordan an “8” on its “self-made” score, which ranges from 1 (inherited wealth but made no effort to increase it) to 10 (started from nothing, grew up poor but and overcoming significant obstacles).
However, Jordan also ranked a “1” on the Philanthropy Score, which is the lowest end of the 1-5 range that measures how much wealth the Forbes 400 richest Americans have given away. According to Forbes, Jordan, who is worth $3 billion, has given away less than 1% of his wealth.
