Michael Jordan is scheduled to attend Blackhawks legend Chris Chelios’ jersey retirement ceremony in Chicago on Sunday, a month after he was oddly absent from the combine amid friction with former teammate Scottie Pippen Bulls Ring of Honor Ceremony at Center.
Chelios revealed the news during an interview on WSCR-AM 670’s “Mully and Haugh Show” on Wednesday.
“I’m going to have them try to bring in all the people that have had an impact on me, obviously (Jordan) was a big part of my ’90s,” Chelios said. “They’re going to be here to support me. In my I’ve had a pretty good Rolodex over my career, so I’m loading it up. This is one last hurray and I’m going to make it even better.
Jordan and Chelios grew closer during their respective playing days in Chicago, so it was no surprise to see the Bulls legend witness the retirement of the retired guard’s No. 7 jersey.
Oddly, Jordan took a rare moment to show up at his former workplace after skipping the Bulls ceremony entirely. In fact, both Jordan and Pippen missed the festivities at the United Center in January because the former’s son Marcus continues to date the latter’s ex-wife Larsa.
Both six-time NBA champions notified the team in advance but did not publicly state the reasons for their absences. Jordan recorded a video about it and played it for guests at the gala in Chicago.
“I’m sorry I can’t be here tonight,” Jordan said in the video, which was shared on the team’s social media accounts. “Believe me, I’m very grateful and very honored.”
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, retired Bulls power forward Dennis Rodman also missed the event, and his absence was actually a surprise.
Sunday’s jersey retirement will take place before the Eagles take on the rival Detroit Red Wings, Chelios’ other former team.
