The Golden Globes have plenty of films to watch and consider for the upcoming 81st annual awards ceremony. With Killers of the Flower Moon and Maestro on the drama side, The Color Purple and The Poor Men on the comedy side, and a buzzy summer double feature with Barbenheimer, a star-studded event is sure to be in store. spectators.
The Globes have entered a new era, with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association now disbanded and many of its problematic members expelled. The annual awards season staple traditionally ranks second only to the Oscars in television ratings. One of the most impressive changes is the increase in the number of films and plays that will be recognized. More spots mean more opportunities for more Barbenheimer actors who could use some support, like supporting cast contenders Emily Blunt and America Ferrera.
The dramatic race will likely pit films from some of cinema’s most beloved masters: Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer and Martin Scorsese for Killers of the Flower Moon, who will also be among the favorites for best director.
More than 300 participants will also have the opportunity to watch timely films about lost loves (Celine Song’s Past Lives) and race relations (Ava DuVernay’s Origins). The comedy landscape is more competitive than its drama counterparts, especially compared to previous years. At the top of the list is Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar film Barbie, which is likely to be one of the most nominated films this year. The name extension will also provide more opportunities for current contenders trying to win the Academy’s affections.
The leading acting races are crowded. Starring dramatic actors, megastars such as Bradley Cooper (Maestro), Leonardo DiCaprio (Flower Moon) and Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) will go up against film luminaries hoping to avoid getting a single acting credit, such as like Colman Domingo. Of note: As many know from following me on social media for the past decade, I have a strong disdain for ties at awards shows. Does anyone remember the three winners for Best Actress in a Drama in 1988: Jodie Foster, Shirley MacLaine and Sigourney Weaver? Well, the likelihood of this happening again is almost impossible after the group introduced new measures when voting for winners.
It states: “In the event of a tie in any category, the winner will be the candidate with the tie on the final ballot who receives the most votes on the nomination ballot. In the unlikely event that, after reviewing the nomination ballots, there is still a tie in any category, two winners will be announced for that category.”
I affirm this rule only for myself.
