Crazy thing, but historical. In August 2023, rap enters parliament: MP Francesco Borrelli quoted the famous 1997 single by Franke hai-nrg verbatim: “Quelli che benpensano”. But why did he quote a song from 26 years ago? Maybe because they don’t write decent lyrics anymore in the songs? Or why can’t the songs of 2023 reflect the current social, political and economic reality of the peninsula? Or is it just generational nostalgia?
OURRap made history by walking through the halls of the Italian Parliament: politician from Campania Francesco Borrelli, militant historian of the Greens and was elected last October to the Chamber of Deputies from the party Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra, literally quoted rapper Frankie hi-nrg. The verdict (the video was “circulated” by the Vista agency) was heard in the House as a commentary on the vote on the fiscal delegation, in response to the actions of the government: “However, from my point of view, the artist Frank Energia (Franky hi-nrg, ed.), wrote a song called Those who think well and it seems to me that the verse of this song is very suitable for the social, political, economic line we are following:In the logic of the game, the only rule is to be shrewd, not to doubt, and not to respect your fellow men, because the latter will be the last if the former are unattainable.‘”.
TONo 1997lyrics by Francesco Di Gesu, pseudonym frankie hello nrg, rapper born in 1969. In addition to the rapper’s lyrics, the single features music by Giulia Puzzo and Ice One, the producer’s stage name from the Sebastiano Ruocco song. As well as the voice in the chorus, which is owned by the singer Riccardo Sinigallia. The song is featured on Frankie’s second album Hi-nrg. “Death of Miracles”, as well as the most famous author’s song. The text is sharp, conspicuous and against the average Italian: sensible. Figures of speech waver between human beings who “like lizards they climb”people “ground to ground like rockets they look like”passing through the phrase quoted by Deputy Borrelli in the Chamber of Deputies. V 2012 Fiorella Mannoia also covered this song for a live album and by the Milanese rapper. Marrakesh V 2019 dedicated song: “Those Who Don’t Think – The Brain (feat. Coez)” which, in addition to using the same base of the 1997 song, also uses a collaboration: Puzzo, Ruocco and apparently Di Gesù, also known as Frankie hi-nrg.
Video, strictly in 3/4 format not 16:9, filmed at night in Rome: the adventures of secondary hypocrites and various subhumans in a taxi. In addition to Frankie hi-nrg, Sinigallia and Ice One sitting and singing in the cabin, the footage uses the presence of numerous characters who are passengers in the taxi driven by the rapper. There are cameos in this section of the nightlife of the capital: Franco Califanosinger and emblem of the Roman world, as well as a legendary actor Marco Gialini.
l1997 clip inspired by very famous Feature Film released in theaters just six years earlier: “Taxi Drivers at Night” (original title: Night on Earth), a wonderful 1991 cameo film directed by Jim Jarmusch set in various cities: Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Rome and Helsinki. Some of the actors in the film are giant movie names, such as the young woman Winona Ryder episode playback. For Italy, the supreme deployed Roberto Benigniwhich interprets crazy taxi driver: on a night journey talks about his sexual perversions to the priestwho is dying of a heart attack because he cannot take his life-saving pill. Believing he killed him, Benigni places him on a bench as if he were sleeping.
But why did MP Borrelli quote a 26-year-old song? Maybe because decent lyrics in Italian were never written in songs again? Or why can’t the songs of 2023 reflect the current social, political and economic reality of the peninsula? It is not known, but it is known for sure that the passage is part of an imaginary collective and generational Neapolitan green politician. Really Francis Borrelli born in the year 1973 and when the rap song came out, he was 24 years old: he belongs to “Generation X”who in this passage, as well as in the film with Winona Ryder and Roberto Benigni, places a piece of his cultural and generational baggage: stylish 90sthe forge of such a culture.
