The co-director of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Kemp Powersrevealed that the next film will see the protagonist Miles Morales become a romantic rival with fellow wall-crawler Hobie Brown/Spider Punk For Gwen Stacy/Spider Woman.
Powers spoke about this element of Across the Spider-Verse with Empire Magazine after the producer Amy Pascal called the film a love story between Miles and Gwen. However, this potential relationship hits a snag due to Gwen and Spider-Punk dating in the latter’s world of New London. “There’s a jealousy,” Powers noted. “When Miles meets Gwen again, she’s not wearing her dancing shoes, but the Converse Chuck Taylors that Spider-Punk gave her. Miles begins to wonder, “How intimate are these two?”
The relationship between Gwen Stacy and Spider-Punk
Miles’ envy of the relationship between Spider Punk and Gwen was first raised in a character reveal by the producers and writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller and Gwen’s interpreter, Hailee Steinfeld, with Miller commenting, “Spider-Punk and Gwen are best friends and have a relationship. They’re both musicians, they’re both, like, badass, and it makes Miles feel a little jealous that they have that connection to each other and Spider-Punk is a really fun character.”
Ironically, although Pascal described the film as a love story, a teaser for Across the Spider-Verse suggested that Miles and Gwen’s relationship was one of friendship, not romance. As for Spider-Punk himself, Powers explained in 2022 why the star of Black Panther Daniel Kaluuya she was cast in the character role. According to Powers, she liked Kaluuya’s Camden accent and recalled that while Spider-Punk was being designed, she “had Daniel’s voice in her head.”
Spider-Man cameos in Across the Spider-Verse
As for the other web-slingers featured in Across the Spider-Verse, it was recently stated that the Spider-Man of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Holland, will appear in the film. Related to this, a later report said that the film would be about what happened in Spider-Man: No Way Home of 2021, with the characters who would bring up the role of Doctor Strange. However, none of this news has been officially confirmed.
In addition to a potential appearance from Holland, Miller has confirmed that the official poster for Across the Spider-Verse features a variant of Spider-Man from The Spectacular Spider-Man among his Spider-People. That said, the former showrunner Greg Weismanwho has stated that he is not involved in Across the Spider-Verse, noted to fans: “Confirmation of the presence of Spec Spidey in the poster does not amount to confirmation of his presence in the film. And much less how it might be treated in that film.”
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be released in theaters on June 2, 2023.
