The number of displaced people in Gaza reached 1.5 million

Hamas carried out the largest attack against Israel in recent years. The Israeli army declared a “state of war alert.” The United Nations announced that the number of displaced people in the Gaza Strip has reached 1.5 million since October 7.

The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Palestine, Lynn Hastings, communicated via video with the session organized by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in New York.

“The humanitarian situation in Gaza is catastrophic.” Using his statement, Hastings noted that Israel’s situation is worsening with the intensification of air attacks.

Hastings pointed out that the death toll in Gaza since October 7 approached 9,000, and about 23,000 people were injured, two-thirds of whom were women and children.

Hastings said, “The number of displaced people in Gaza since October 7 has reached 1.5 million people.” He said.

“The truth is that there is no truly safe place in Gaza right now.” Hastings warned that since the beginning of the conflicts, 50 facilities belonging to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) have been bombed and 72 UNRWA employees have lost their lives.

Hastings stated that access to food and water had become a very serious problem.

Regarding financing, Hastings stressed that about $1.2 billion is needed to meet the needs of people in Gaza and the West Bank by the end of the year.
