After taking note of Khartoum’s letter calling for the “immediate” termination of the United Nations Transition Support Mission (UNITAMS), the Security Council adopted a resolution to end its mandate effective Sunday.
14 of the 15 Council members voted in favor of the resolution, while Russia abstained from the vote.
UNITAMS began its work there in early 2021, but faced great opposition from the Muslim Brotherhood and senior army leaders.
On Tuesday, Abdullah Hamdok, former Prime Minister of the government, sent two letters on behalf of the Coordination of Civil Democratic Forces, which seeks to stop the war, to the Secretary General of the United Nations and the President of the Security Council, in which he called on maintain the mission and renew its mandate.
Stations of the UNITAM trip to Sudan:
- June 2020: The UNITAMS mission is established, led by the German Volker Peretz.
- November 2021: The mission engaged in an arduous political process in collaboration with the African Union, the United States and a number of Arab and European countries to defuse the crisis resulting from the decisions of 25 October 2021.
