The Weeknd, The Idol canceled after one season

After a critically acclaimed and controversial season on HBO, The Weeknd’s Idol was cancelled.

The Weeknd co-created it with Sam Levinson, the inspiration behind Euphoriaand writer/producer Reza Fahim. Ethiopian-Canadian singer-songwriter (real name: Abel Tesfaye) also starred in the series as Tedros.a kind of guru who enters the life of aspiring pop star Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) and takes control of every aspect of her world.

Idol “This is one of HBO’s most provocative original programs and we are pleased with the strong response from viewers,” an HBO spokesperson said in a statement accompanying the cancellation news, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers, have decided not to film a second season. We are grateful to the creators, cast and crew for their incredible work.”

Toxic Environment Rumors The Weeknd’s The Idol

The series made headlines long before its debut. Report rolling stone talked about a toxic work environment, a few other reports talked behind the scenes, and then had a brilliant premierenever before appeared in a television series, at the Cannes Film Festival last May.
In an interview given Vanity Fair in May, The Weeknd rejected a behind-the-scenes drama, stating, “The show gets re-shot every day… What do you want to do? That’s the problem, that’s what the show is about.” Then at a press conference in Cannes, The Weeknd said that he and Levinson were trying to create “something special, something funny to make people laugh, but it would probably make someone else angry.”

Second Hollywood ReporterOn June 4, “Idol” was watched by 913,000 viewers during prime time. HBO reported that the first episode was watched by 7 million viewers more than two months after its debut.

At the beginning of summer,The show’s soundtrack peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot Trending Songs chart. One of the girls from The Weeknd, starring Jennie and Lily-Rose Depp, climbed to number one on the chart on July 1st.
