The Weeknd continues to boycott the Grammys, but two of his projects are his Avatar: The Way of Water theme song and Emmy nomination Live at SoFi Stadium concert film is on the Grammy ballot.
Disney Music Group confirmed Hollywood Reporter that they presented “Nothing Is Lost (You Give Me Strength)” with Avatars for Best Song Written for Visual Media, and HBO confirmed it was presenting the singer’s concert special in the Best Music Film category.
“Nothing is Lost”, released in December 2022, was shortlisted for Best Original Song at this year’s Oscars. The Weeknd co-wrote the song with Grammy Award-winning composer Simon Franglen and Swedish House Mafia members Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso. If nominated, Franglen and the electronic trio will receive nominations along with The Weeknd.
Live at SoFi Stadium was filmed over two nights in Inglewood in November 2022, with The Weeknd performing at his Tour “After an hour before dawn”. The concert, directed by Micah Bickham, premiered in March and is nominated for two Emmy Awards: Outstanding Technical Directing and Cinematography for a Special Design and Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction for a Variety Special. If nominated for a Grammy, Bickham and the producers will receive nominations along with The Weeknd.
The Weeknd vowed to boycott the Grammys after he failed to earn nominations for the 2021 show, despite having the year’s biggest hit “Blinding Lights” and the best-selling album with After closing. Months after The Weeknd rocked the awards show, the Academy announced it was eliminating its nomination review committees—the panels that determined contenders for the music show’s key awards. The winners are now chosen by pure vote.
But because he was seriously snubbed, The Weeknd continued to receive nominations, even winning a Grammy last year. At the 2022 show, he received two nominations for album of the year for his guest appearance on Doja Cat’s. Planet She and Kanye West Dondaand he won best melodic rap performance for his work on West’s “Hurricane,” which also featured Lil Baby.
When the nominations are announced on November 10, The Weeknd could receive more nominations for his collaboration. He appears on one of the year’s biggest hits, Metro Boomin’s “Creepin’,” which peaked at No. 3 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The track—a remake of Mario Winans, Diddy and Enya’s 2004 hit “I Don’t Wanna Know”—also features 21 Savage and was nominated for several Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Best R&B Performance, Best R&B Song and Best Music. video.
The Weeknd’s guest appearance on Diddy’s “Another One of Me” also earned him multiple awards. The track, which also features French Montana and 21 Savage, was nominated for award of the year, song of the year, best melodic rap performance and best music video. And “K-Pop,” a song by Travis Scott featuring The Weeknd and Bad Bunny, was nominated for best pop duo/group performance.
The Weeknd received 13 Grammy Award nominations and won four awards, including Best R&B Performance for “Earned It (Fifty Shades of Grey)” and two wins for Best Urban Contemporary Album (The beauty behind the madness, Starboy). The Grammy Awards will air live on February 4, 2024; albums and songs released between October 1, 2022 and September. December 15, 2023 qualify for the upcoming show. Ballots for the first round opened on Wednesday.
